2. Pattern & Mold Creation
Once designs are finalized, our skilled toolmakers craft precision metal molds from heat-resistant materials. For components with complex internal geometries, we simultaneously develop specialized sand cores that will be inserted into the metal mold during production.
3. Material Selection & Preparation
Premier Aluminum maintains a diverse inventory of aluminum alloys which we are able to match and quickly change to meet specific performance requirements. Our metallurgists prepare the selected aluminum to precise specifications, carefully controlling temperature and chemical composition to ensure optimal material properties.
4. Pre-Heating & Coating
Before casting begins, molds are pre-heated to specific temperatures and coated with specialized refractory materials. This critical step prevents premature solidification, reduces thermal shock, and facilitates proper metal flow while extending mold life.
5. Casting Process
During the casting operation, molten aluminum is poured into the prepared mold assembly at carefully controlled rates and temperatures. Unlike high-pressure die casting, our semi-permanent process relies primarily on gravity to fill the mold, reducing turbulence and entrapped gases for superior metallurgical integrity.
6. Solidification & Cooling
After filling, the casting undergoes a controlled cooling process monitored by our experienced technicians. This phase is crucial for developing optimal microstructure and mechanical properties while minimizing internal stresses.
7. Extraction & Core Removal
Once sufficiently cooled, castings are carefully extracted from the metal mold. Any sand cores are removed through mechanical and thermal processes, revealing the finished internal geometries.
8. Secondary & Value Added Services
Each casting undergoes thorough inspection before advancing to any required secondary operations, which might include CNC machining, heat treatment, surface finishing, or assembly. Our comprehensive quality management system ensures every component meets or exceeds specifications.
